10 New Yoga Poses You Can Create, i.e. Use Animal Names, Describe Alignment, Purpose & Effects

It’s important to note that these poses are written for a challenge from Claudia Azula Altucher’s book, “Become an Idea Machine”. Yes, I know they may seem silly to some, but it was really a good effort to get the creative juices flowing.

  1. The Beluga Blowhole: You lean over a sink so that your back is curved, and then blow through your nostrils are hard as you can to expel air and mucous, which will also expel any unnecessary emotional back up from your day
  2. The Submissive Cat:  You lie on your back, rolling to and fro, leaving your tummy vulnerable to the world, welcoming anyone who wants to rub it. It’s your way of submitting to the universe that you are willing to accept whatever comes your way; you can handle it.
  3. The Dancing Bear: Stand on your tiptoes with your arms way over your head whilst pirouetting. It allows you to feel tall and free, while the pirouette reminds you that everyone and everything around you should feel the same.
  4. The Gnawing Cow: move your face around as though chewing cud. Your whole jaw, cheekbones, mouth and nose will  be awakened by this exaggerated movement.
  5. The Inquisitive Owl: Carefully move your head side to side as far as your can go each way to give your neck a needed stretch.
  6. The Wandering Albatross: Expand your arms/wings as far as they will go. Use your wings to create an orb all around you; on your sides, above and beaneath you. It creates an orb of energy that will stay with you, whilst stretching your arms, back and shoulders.
  7. The Screaming Goat: Start your yoga practice out with this move. Scream as unexpectedly loud as you can to release all of your negative emotional energy. Then, you can move into your routine free of spiritual toxins. There’s a good chance that it’ll make you laugh, too – bonus.
  8. The Starfish Stomach: Push your stomach as far out as it will go, along with releasing your breath, as if you’re a starfish trying to trap its prey. Then imagine you’ve trapped your prey and you’re pulling it all the way back into your stomach to digest it, while simultaneously breathing in. This cleanses your lungs and exercises your stomach muscles at the same time.
  9. The Komodo Dragon: Go down on all fours on a mat. Lift your right leg slightly off the ground as though about to walk. Lift up the opposite arm. Try to hold the pose to try to maintain balance. Now switch.
  10. The Koala Cuddle: Find a trusted yoga partner. Hug them closely, whilst breathing deeply for a count of seven steamboats. Feel your stress dissipate in the arms of your koala friend.
